Dream a little dream……….

When I was a little girl I had many a dream. Little dreams. Big dreams. Dreams that would never come to fruition. Dreams that when they did come true, were even more amazing than I could ever have imagined.

Growing up, I spent many hours playing with my Nana's dolls. The entire underneath of her house was dedicated to the most magnificent collection. International dolls, handmade dolls, big, little, cute, scary and everything in between. Every time I would go there I was drawn to a few in particular. A beautiful mermaid that sat ever so graciously atop a rock (which also happened to be my Papa's most favourite as well), a very odd looking monk with a big coat (my cousins will remember this one!) and a set of Babushka dolls. They were the most vibrant red colour, like a beacon amongst the other dolls that lined the walls. I would sit for hours (or what seemed like hours) pulling them apart, putting them back together, lining them up, marching them across the room, stacking them inside each other……..

I thought they were the most beautiful of all in the collection, and I dreamed that one day I would travel across the globe in search of a set of shiny, red babushka dolls of my very own.

Until recently, I hadn't really thought about this time in my childhood for a long time……..

We are part way through a very loooooong renovation process, which currently has me moving bits & pieces, belongings of all kinds and an entire collection of long forgotten boxes from one room to the next, condensing as we go, in search of this miraculous amount of space I am hoping to find. During one of my most recent efforts, I came across three very interesting boxes.

All of them from our past lives from before children. All of them very interesting.

Box Number 1

If these boxes are thought of as our histoy, this one would probably we considered ancient. This was one box that reminded me of a lot of those thoughts, feelings, ideals, dreams and hopes for the future I had so many years ago.

There was a 'kissing licence' with the official sections written in red so you knew which parts were very important. A handwritten letter I received when I was 8 years old from my grandmother, who passed away a month later. Love letters, both received and never sent (Mmmmmmm…..it did make for interesting reading!). A porcelain clown. That beautiful mermaid doll that I received upon my Nana's passing.

So many things to reminisce over, shake my head laughing at (and I mean really laughing, out loud). So many things that coincided with the dreams of my childhood. My adolescence.

Box Number 2

You may get the impression that I am a bit of a hoarder. Rightly so. My husband on the other hand is the complete opposite. I think the only reason this box exists is that it was entrusted to me from his mum!

Well, not quite sure where to start with his box…..

A tiny green checked romper, which I can only guess was worn as a little bub, toddling around. A scrapbook filled with first and second birthday cards (old paper always has that same distinct smell). Quite a few soccer trophies. School books and a silver cross (remnants of a catholic education). Photographs from his first wedding (big hair, big sleeves…..and we're not just talking the bride here……I suppose, it was the early 90's).

Box Number 3

The contents of this box could probably be considered relatively recent history. Still from before kiddies, but quite a few things that use to be in and around our house until we condensed in anticipation of buba number one, then two, then three……All of those things seem to have ended up in this box. Some things I struggled to find the significance as to why I may have kept them and others it was glaringly obvious. Photos from our travels, airline tickets, the wax seal that was used on our wedding invitations, name badges from previous jobs. And right at the bottom of the box, there it was.

My very own set of babushka dolls. Red and very shiny. The dolls I had indeed set out across the globe in search of and found. Found in a quaint little village, a world away from the downstairs of my grandparent's home.

I feel so incredibly blessed that so many of my dreams have indeed become a reality. The life changing ones, the unexpected ones, even the little ones, the obscure ones. But I think the one dream that I had, a dream that I could never truly ever understand how amazing it would be until it was to come true, was to become a mother.

The image for this post, is of my daughter's very own set of Babushka dolls, given to her by her Nana.

I sit and I watch my little girl play with her shiny red babushka dolls. I wonder what she is dreaming about. I watch her pull them apart, put them back together, line them up, march them across the room, stack them inside each other….

This little bundle of gorgeousness was the first newborn in my studio for 2012, and what an absolute dream he proved to be! It must be in his genes you see as his lovely mummy is a very talented photographer herself :) At just 13 days old, he slept through his whole session, and even offered a smile every now and then. Thank you so much for bringing your beautiful baby boy to visit! xxx

Project-52…..week 2…..PATTERN {Brisbane Photographer}

Pattern…..

After last week's challenge, I have decided to base all of my 'Project 52' posts around the little things, things I see everyday as a mum, as a wife, as a friend (and not necessarily as a photographer). These may be things that I usually observe, rather than comment on, but somehow make up part of my everyday life and that are significant. Well, significant to me anyway!

For those of you who know me well, you will have met my super creative side, paired with (and sometimes opposed to) the super organised, ordered side to my personality. I distinctly remember flying over London for the first time and being incredibly excited, not (totally) because we were embarking on an unchartered adventure of a life time, but because as I looked out of the aeroplane window, I could see all of these tiny little buildings with matching brickwork, matching roofs, matching chimneys, all lined up in little rows. Sad I know!

Depending on the day and the circumstance, either one of these personality traits will usually reign supreme, but when the stars align, both work together in complete harmony. These are typically the days I find I am the most productive and centred, and in turn, creative. My eldest daughter however, was not blessed with this Dr Jekyll / Mr Hyde type personality trait (some would say quite fortunately), she leans more towards the ummmmmm, how shall we say it………..un-ordered scheme of things. 110% creative, 100% of the time.

How does this apply to this week's topic of 'pattern' I hear you ask?

Well, my daughter you see, would love nothing more than to spend her days dressed in her favourite t-shirt and favourite (somewhat too small, but far too precious to pack away just yet) skirt, with her waist length ringlet bed head hair flicking and flying around the place! Its kind of a 'look out, you may just lose an eye if she turns around to quick' type scenario.

On weekends and holidays she kind of embodies this wild child, uninhibited spirit that dances her way through the house to whatever music is playing (and with a Daddy who worked in the music industry in a past life, the collection is quite eclectic).

And sometimes I just sit and watch.

I watch in awe.

Her free spirit.

Her love for life.

The sparkle in eyes.

The incredible grace she maintains during an extensive session of air-guitar.

In awe that I helped create such a perfect little human.

And sometimes she will come and sit with me. Very close. Close enough for her to create quite a substantial beard for both of us with her crazy locks.

We both laugh and in turn tickle each others faces with a single curl.

I love her.

I am acutely aware that these days will soon be the rarity, rather than the regular as the normality of daily routines kick back in in just a few short weeks. And I know in turn, it will bring about the daily task of getting dressed in to (not the aforementioned favourite attire), but rather, a uniform. I also know that this will be quite a transition for this creative babe of mine. No more flicking, frolicking and twirling around, but the ordered and patterned, uniform appropriate hair will prevail.

The plait.

I must admit, the organised side of my personality appreciates the pattern it creates, its symmetry and simplicity, but I can't help be a little sad every time I tie back that crazy hair.

I do hope that even though she may look neat and ordered on the outside, she is still twirling around and dancing to the beat of her own drum on the inside.

Project-52…..Reflection {Brisbane Photographer}

With the beginning of the new year there seems to have been a surge in the the popularity of photography challenges, such as the '365 Day Challenge' and the 'Photo a Day' for a month challenge. For a while now I have watched on as others in the industry have taken on these fun and creative tasks (I use the word 'tasks' very lightly here) and am in awe at how they produce gorgeous images each and every day based around a particular theme or self directed idea. Always up for a challenge, I thought 2012 would be a great time to embark on my own creative journey and after (honestly) evaluating my commitment to the cause, I decided 'Project 52' was probably more up my alley, with a more realistic timeframe of one image per week, based loosely around a pre-determined theme.

So here goes, week one………..reflection…………

My new favourite hobby is to lay down every afternoon in the backyard on our recently delivered trampoline (dual thanks to both school holidays and to Santa) and watch the trees above blowing around the in the sky, thinking about a multitude of things, from life's big questions, to what I might cook for dinner (when I finally decide to get up and share the trampoline with my kiddies). As cliched as it may sound, coupled with a cup of tea and Lindt chocolate balls left over from Christmas, I am pretty much in heaven out there.

So this image is my typical afternoon view, and new found site for reflection.

I know the challenge is one image a week, but I got a little carried away and had to capture the only two things that I can see growing in my garden (whilst laying on said trampoline)…..lemons and weeds. I know it is kind of bending the rules slightly, but I figure I am bound to miss a week here or there, so maybe a few extra images in the beginning will make up for it!!

I must admit, this would have to be one of my favourite photo shoots ever…..for a few reasons……firstly, it feels as though this gorgeous girl has known me all of my life (well, nearly, I think we were about 9 years old….interschool netball…….mutual dislike for sports…) and over the last 25 years, we have experienced life's events together both good and bad. And like any relationship worth having, we have certainly had our own ups and downs, but I have always figured that this is a good thing because you know you are part of the relationship by choice, not simply because it has always been there. The second reason this has been a memorable experience, is that at the start of the shoot, I was given free range, a creative licence if you will ( a photographer's dream!!), and was able to create an image that has been swirling around in my head for quite some time……..and for that I am tuly grateful xxx I am so incredibly excited to meet this newest addition, and watching as our children grow together and hopefully form friendships that last a lifetime…..just like that of their mothers xxx

Julie and Chris……..{Brisbane Wedding Photographer}

The 11/11/11 was a very popular day for couples to be married, for many believed it to bring good luck….no exception for Julie and Chris, who increased their good luck by being married at 11.11am (well nearly……I know traditionally it is the bride who is usually late……not this time though!!) When I first walked in and saw Julie dressed, looking absolutley stunning with a smile that was a true refelction of her happiness, I knew we were in for a great day. Surrounded by their family and friends, Julie and Chris declared their love and affection (along with their sense of humour) in a touching ceremony that brought a tear to the eye of many of the guests. Julie and Chris, you made me both laugh and cry (in a good way!!!) and your wedding day was such a pleasure. Hugs and kisses to you both xxx
